Eight million Italians live in relative poverty

Eight million Italians live in relative poverty

Nearly one in four in south are poor, says Istat

(ANSA) - Rome, July 17 - Just over 11% of families in recession-hit Italy lived in relative poverty in 2011, national statistics institute Istat said Tuesday.

This translates into roughly 8.1 million people out of a total population of 60.6 million.

The figures are contained in the institute's annual poverty report for 2011, which set the relative poverty threshold at 1,011.03 euros per month for a two-member family. Nearly one in four families in southern Italy were relatively poor in 2011, with higher rates in Sicily and Calabria, the report said. Furthermore, 7.6% of families were considered at risk of poverty, as they could be easily pushed over the threshold in the case of the need to make unexpected expenditure.
